Sign Language Interpreter Responsibilities
As an SLI, you need to have an excellent memory, listening, and communication skills. It is helpful to be an expert in ASL and well-trained for an American Sign Language job. As a reward for your expertise, you communicate a language that those with hearing loss or impairment struggle to understand. Working with individuals or small groups, a sign language interpreter is an essential piece of the puzzle for students with hearing challenges. Bilingual Therapies has an extensive support network for SLI professionals, and our community of experts can help foster your career.
Sign Language Interpreter Requirements
If you are focused on your SLI career goals, the path to certification is relatively straightforward. Typically, you will need to get a bachelor’s degree, but some states and programs accept an associate degree. While many candidates major in ASL or sign language interpreting, other fields such as English or communications may suffice. Many SLI professionals continue to obtain certification, but it is not typically a requirement for hiring. RID – the Registry for the Interpreters of the Deaf – provides certification, such as the Oral Transliteration Certificate, for those wishing to further their skill set.
Sign Language Interpreter Salary and Job Outlook
You can expect a wide variety of salaries among sign language interpreters, depending on the setting (hospitals, schools, businesses, government, etc.). Demand is strong for SLIs across all industries: the projected growth rate is 18% by 2026, much higher than average.
