Ready to Celebrate Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a major celebration in the United States. As we head into the month of May, it’s a nice time to do something in speech sessions that will focus on mothers. It is always nice to be able to encourage children to talk about parts of their life. This allows them to be more comfortable with conversation skills. Making crafts allows children to work on speech and language goals while also making a project that they may take home for a special someone this Mother’s Day.

Love Filled Book for Mom

While making Mother’s Day cards is something easy to do, kids enjoy creating their own books. Making flip books is a great activity that will work on speech skills. Children will be able to model and talk through the steps required during the process of making and decorating all of the pages. The top section of the book will say “To ____ I love you because…” and could have a photo of the child on the front or their drawings. Along each flap, you continue the sentence with different ways the child loved their mother. On the page, they will then illustrate the pages with drawing of their mother and more. When the books are finished, allow each child time to share their book with the group. Focus on talking slowly, working on articulation, and self confidence when talking in front of peers.  For multilingual families, it may be helpful to write translations on the back to assist anyone that may have some difficulty.

Cupcakes for Mom

Why not make a cupcake for Mom for Mother’s Day? Kids can make a special treat for their mother. You will need construction paper to make the top and bottom portions of the cupcake. Trace cupcake shapes and allow children to select their cupcake and frosting flavors with different colored paper. Make large sprinkle heart shapes ahead of time in different colors. Each of the hearts will have a word that describes the child’s mother. When finished, a challenge would be for the child to use each word that is on a sprinkle in a sentence.

The sky is the limit with crafts that are great for Mother’s Day that can be used during speech and language sessions. Always remember to think about the children that you are working with. If they do not have a mother in their life, talk about other women that are important and special. They can honor that significant woman from their life for the holiday. Aunts, sisters, grandmothers, cousins, and other family members are great choices.
