Teacher of the Visually Impaired Responsibilities
TVIs handle a wide variety of tasks throughout the day. Their primary role as a special education teacher is to provide instruction to students with vision impairments or blindness. They need to adapt standard subject material to work for their population. A teacher of the visually impaired develops IEPs for students, stays current with best practices in the field, and has an in-depth knowledge of the latest technology and resources available to their students. TVIs strive to advocate for students with visual impairment. Bilingual teachers of the visually impaired juggle multiple approaches and modes of communication, adding complexity to an already dynamic job. We offer expertise and assistance to both bilingual and monolingual TVIs and are ready to set you up for excellence.
Teacher of the Visually Impaired Requirements
The different requirements to become a TVI vary state by state. However, all states require at least a bachelor’s degree and a state teacher’s license. Often, TVI jobs go to applicants with a master’s degree or a doctorate. Depending on the state, you will need either a standard special education teaching credential or a specialized credential, with an emphasis on teaching individuals with visual impairments. Student teaching is often required, and you will need to renew your certification regularly to maintain your status.
Teacher of the Visually Impaired Salary and Job Outlook
Teachers of the visually impaired can expect salaries similar to other special education teachers in their school district. There is a wide range of salaries depending on the state or city in which you work. Other factors include your years of experience and level of education and certification. The job outlook for most special education teachers, including TVIs, is projected to grow at a 3% rate between 2018 – 2028. However, early childhood special education teachers can anticipate an 8% increase during the period.
