School-Based Physical Therapy Requirements

School-based physical therapy differs from medical PT, and there is a slightly different focus. At schools, the goal is to maximize educational outcomes for students who receive services. School-based PTs will need to be licensed in the state where they practice. A master’s degree in physical therapy was sufficient in the recent past, but today you need to obtain a DPT (Doctoral Degree in Physical Therapy). The DPT involves coursework, supervised practice, and culminates in the National Physical Therapy Examination.

Salaries for school-based physical therapists vary widely. Much of the variance depends on which state you are in, how much experience you have, and the setting of your practice. No matter where in the country you are, physical therapy is in demand. Between 2018 – 2028, the BLS predicts a growth rate of 22% for PT in general, which is well above the national average.
