School Occupational Therapist and COTA Responsibilities
School-based occupational therapy is complex. Students have different challenges, and the OT designs various programs for each individual. A COTA faces many related tasks to those found in occupational therapy jobs, including carrying out recovery plans that the OT has laid out. Occupational therapists develop strategies to help students face various challenges, such as rehabilitating from physical or neurological injuries. Both OTs and COTAs keep detailed records and monitor progress closely. Bilingual Therapies provides an expansive team of compassionate experts, here to help both monolingual and bilingual occupational therapists and COTAs. No matter the specific challenges that arise within the scope of their responsibilities, we have a community of helpful, inspiring individuals.
School Occupational Therapist and COTA Requirements
The requirements vary widely between school occupational therapists and certified occupational therapy assistant jobs. To become a school OT, you will need a Master’s degree in occupational therapy. Additionally, you will need to get a license in the state where you provide services. Some states require the NBCOT (National Board for Certifying Occupational Therapy) exam to obtain certification, while other states develop and accept alternate licensing tests. OTs can specialize in their practice; school-based OTs often focus on pediatric occupational therapy. COTAs are therapy assistants, with a difference: they are certified. Not only do they pass a certification exam, the NBCOT-COTA, but they have also taken an essential step towards becoming occupational therapists.
School Occupational Therapy Salary and Job Outlook
School occupational therapists command salaries that are well above the national median. Salaries vary based on specialization, industry and the level of certification that the OT possesses. Between 2018-2028, occupational therapists, including school OTs, can expect above-average job growth. The projected rate of growth is 18%, higher than many other professions’ outlooks.
