Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher Responsibilities
DHH teachers are versatile. They thrive on complexity and are constant advocates for their students. They assist the IEP team with student assessment and instructional design and strive to create positive classroom cultures for students with hearing impairments. The DHH teacher supports students in the classroom as well as ensures success in transition and assessment. While monolingual DHH teachers sign and teach in one language, bilingual teachers have the added layer of communicating in two languages – both verbally and non-verbally.
DHH Teacher Requirements
To provide deaf and hard of hearing services, candidates need to fulfill several requirements. After you receive a bachelor’s degree, usually in Education or a related field, you will need to obtain a special education teaching credential, with a focus in deaf and hard of hearing. To receive the certification, you will have to complete coursework, pass the state Praxis exam and complete student teaching or interning. Many DHH teachers obtain a Master’s degree in the field, and some pursue a doctorate. You can also focus on several specialties, including Oral/Aural, ASL/English, bilingual and comprehensive. Each state varies slightly in its certification requirements, depending on the population you will serve, so be sure to research the specific benchmarks you need to meet.
DHH Teacher Salary and Job Outlook
Deaf and hard of hearing teachers can expect to have similar salaries as other special education teachers, varying by state and years of experience. As more students are identified with hearing challenges and enter the special education setting, the demand for DHH service providers continues to be robust. From 2019-2029, the projected job growth for special education teachers, including DHH teachers, is 3%.

Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (WFH Opportunity)
Bilingual Therapies is currently looking for a Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for a school district in Massachusetts who will be providing VIRTUAL services via our HIPAA compliant Tele- conferencing platform.
