The Latest on Publications and Conferences on Bilingualism & Bilingual Issues

Hopefully, summertime is an opportunity for many of us to pause, relax, and seek opportunities to refresh and update our knowledge base. In this column, I will list some very recent and upcoming publications as well as conferences that may be of interest to you.

I do welcome any additional suggestions you might have so please write to me!! In most cases, I am unable to provide you with specific comments because the information is extremely recent or forthcoming.


  1. Centeno, J. G., Anderson, R., & Obler, L. (Eds.) (July 2007). Communication disorders in Spanish-speakers: Theoretical, research and clinical aspects. Clevedon, England: Multilingual Matters.
    As the title indicates, this is an edited volume where theoretical, research, and clinical issues are discussed in relation to communication disorders— with a focus on the Spanish-speaking population.
  2. Chitester, D. (June 2007). Unlocking the enigma of the second language learner: Educator and parental resource guide. Pennington, N.J: Second Language, Literacy & Learning Connection, LL.
    The content of this guide is based on a review of the literature and the author’s own experience.  Much of the content focuses on outlining best strategies to ensure second language learners’ educational success. Reasons for lower educational attainment for many of these students is discussed in detail with suggestions for teachers and parents on how to remedy this situation.
  3. Kohnert, K. (June 2007). Language disorders in bilingual children and adults. San Diego, CA: Plural Publications.
    Includes information on typical and atypical language development of second language development in children and adults taking into account the multiple factors that affect this process. In reviewing this information, the author focuses on the interaction of social, cognitive, and communicative systems in bridging assessment and interventions issues.
  4. Kayser, H. (June 2007). Understanding and educating Latino preschool children. San Diego, CA: Plural Publications.
    This book provides a description of successful strategies that speech-language pathologists have implemented to address various speech, language and communication challenges in young children. Although the book focuses on the Hispanic populations, the principles that are described may be applied in working with other language and cultural minorities.
  5. Langdon, H. W. (July 2007). Assessment and intervention of communicative disorders in culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Clifton Park. NY: Thomson Delmar Learning.
    The assessment and planning of intervention for individuals with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds cannot be completed through testing only. This book emphasizes the importance of “looking at the whole individual,” that is, taking into account his/her linguistic and experiential backgrounds, health, and educational history amongst other variables. Chapters are written to discuss the process of integrating these components into fair assessments and practical intervention plans.
  6. Roseberry-McKibbin, C. (June 2007). Increasing the language skills of students from low-income
    San Diego, CA: Plural Publications.
    The author addresses the unique needs of children who come from low-income and economically poor backgrounds with implications on their language development. How to work effectively with those children’s families is also addressed.
  7. McLeod, S. (Ed.), (2007). The international guide to speech acquisition. Clifton Park: N.Y. Thomson Delmar Learning.
    This reference includes a review of speech acquisition (articulation, phonology, and phonetics) for 12 different English-speaking dialects and 24 languages other than English.


  1. ASHA School Conference –Pittsburg, Penn. (July 13-15). The conference will include sessions on a multitude of topics which include literacy issues, stuttering, phonology, autism, voice and resonance, augmentative communication, cochlear implants, working with adolescents, caseload management, and RtI. Several sessions will be addressing the specific needs of linguistically and culturally diverse children. For more information, please visit the ASHA website
  2. Bilingual Therapies Conference- Cancún, Mexico (July 19-21). Topics covered during the conference include coping with a changing world as a service provider, first language loss, implementation of effective and efficient educational bilingual intervention plans, evidence in treating phonological disorders in bilingual children and managing cultural and linguistic differences in evaluation to determine difference vs. disorders.
